Most U.S pharmacies online are either established national chains; individual companies that have agreements to dispense through those pharmacies, or websites that offer only a limited number of popular prescription drugs.

A high number of these online US Pharmacies are usually:

  • More expensive than your local pharmacy
  • May not require an actual prescription
  • Probably offer an online consultation

This category of pharmacies is by far the highest in number because they use many different websites and business names to market their popular weight loss and sexual prescription drugs.

Just like "brick and mortar" pharmacies, online pharmacies are regulated by the states in which they reside.
In 1999, NABP became aware of the need for this program when consumers contacted several state pharmacy boards to complain about illegal Internet prescribing and dispensing sites posing as legitimate pharmacies. The Association developed the VIPPS program in response to public and regulatory agency concerns regarding safety of Internet pharmacy practices in order to provide a means for the public to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate online pharmacy practice sites.

To date,
VIPPS certified pharmacies are limited to a few large, national U.S. pharmacy chains, mail order pharmacies sponsored by drug benefit companies, and a handful of more general online pharmacies. Unlike epharmacies.com, the VIPPS program does not comparatively rate these sites, provide price comparisons, nor does it allow Canadian pharmacies to participate.

For people living in the U.S., the benefits of buying from a U.S. Online pharmacy rather than a foreign online pharmacy may include:

  • Lower prices on generics: U.S. online pharmacies are often half the price of Canadian pharmacies due to greater competition in the U.S. market
  • Ability to use your prescription drug insurance to purchase medications
  • Easier recourse to take legal action in case you are cheated
  • Lower shipping charges

Please Remember: If you do not have insurance, or your insurance does not cover the drugs you need or want, U.S. online pharmacies are almost always more expensive than a foreign pharmacy.
